The study of history is vital to understand our place in the world today – but, as many historians know, this is not why we do it. Ultimately, it is because we all find that coming to understand more about the world and its people, as they were and are, is fascinating in itself. The 1440 Review’s reason for being, as we see it, is to enable and encourage this intellectual curiosity. We have been glad to carry out this mission and, as we ourselves are consigned to history, are hopeful that our successors will do so too.
